What is Dry Eye?

A dry eye is a condition in which the eyes either don’t produce enough tears or evaporate too quickly, leading to insufficient lubrication. This can cause dryness, irritation, redness, and blurry vision. Common causes include environmental factors, aging, certain medications, and underlying health conditions. Proper treatment can alleviate discomfort and protect long-term eye health.

Dry eye is typically classified into two main types:

  • Evaporative Dry Eye: This type occurs when there is a deficiency in the oily layer of the tears, causing them to evaporate too quickly. Common contributing factors include prolonged screen time, dry environmental conditions, and certain medications.
  • Aqueous-Deficient Dry Eye: This type happens when the tear glands fail to produce enough of the watery layer of tears. It is often associated with conditions like Sjögren’s syndrome or damage to the tear glands.

Dry eye is a condition that affects many people, often causing pain and impacting everyday life. At Clear View Vision Center, we offer personalized treatments to help relieve your symptoms and protect your eye health.

How Dry Eye Management Works

Our Dry Eye Management program starts with a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of your dry eye symptoms. From there, we create a personalized plan that may include treatments such as artificial tears, warm compresses, or advanced therapies like Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). Treatment sessions are simple, effective, and often minutes long, and they are designed to improve comfort and vision quality.

Lubrication Solutions

  • Artificial Tears: Available in various formulations, artificial tears offer temporary relief by lubricating the eyes and replenishing essential tear components. We can recommend the most suitable type for your needs.
  • Gel Drops and Night Ointments: For more severe cases, gel drops or night ointments provide long-lasting relief by forming a protective layer over the eyes, offering moisture throughout the night.

Thermal and Gland Treatments

  • Warm Compresses: Applying warm compresses can help unblock clogged oil glands and improve tear quality, making this a simple and effective daily treatment to enhance comfort.
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy: IPL targets the meibomian glands to reduce inflammation and improve tear production, offering lasting relief for evaporative dry eye.

Eyelid Hygiene and Maintenance

Lid Wipes and Hypochlorous Acid: Proper eyelid hygiene is crucial for managing dry eyes. Lid wipes and hypochlorous acid solutions helps clear away debris, excess oils, and bacteria, improving overall eye health and tear quality.

Advanced Tear Retention and Healing

  • Punctal Plugs: Tiny devices inserted into the tear ducts to reduce tear drainage, helping to keep the eyes moisturized for longer periods.
  • Amniotic Membrane Therapy: For severe cases, amniotic membranes can be applied to the eye’s surface to promote healing, reduce inflammation, and provide long-term relief.
